It's my first year teaching AP Literature, and I'm seeking some help in strengthening my classroom library. Throughout the year, we will read multiple novels together as a class, but I also want to provide access to beautifully written novels for choice reading that features representation for my very diverse classroom. My kids come from a variety of backgrounds and family situations, and I'm hoping that they might recognize themselves in some of these stories or better understand where some of their classmates are coming from. Students will be tasked with interpreting the meaning of the novel through thorough analysis of the author's choices. They will make connections with other stories, poems, music, art. They will use them to prepare for the AP Exam. But, really, I am hoping they will fall a little bit in love with the story, a character, a setting, a phrase, and paradoxically, that same heart be a little bit broken. That they will see that humans are complex and question what they would do in the same situation as these characters. That they will wonder how people can endure soul crushing acts and still maintain their humanity and hope. That they will see that we are never too far removed from our past. That they will discover for themselves the true purpose of fiction.
