As we begin a year of unknowns and changes in learning, the students need as much consistency as possible. I want my students to grow as readers by using mentor texts to help give them an anchor for their personal reading. For example, Saturdays and Teacakes by Lester Laminack uses great imagery to help pull readers into the story by creating a feeling of excitement, happiness, and warmth. After working as a class to find exemplars, students can look for examples in their own reading and explore author's craft. By using the Rooted in Reading program and the books included, I will be able to provide students with a challenging reading program that follows a predictable, consistent pattern that they will be able to follow whether learning at school or from home. The variety of genres provided gives students an almost endless amount of exposure and support that helps them grow as a reader. This is a great program, with fantastic books. I am excited for the consistency it will bring to inconsistent times, but there is more. Reading together helps our class to bond as well. There is a special connection built through the laughs, tears, and emotions shared through enjoying stories together as a class. Thank you for helping build reading skills and relationships.
