George Washington Carver, Malala Yousafzai, and Wilma Rudolph - all people of color that have changed the world. We study famous figures such as these in our classroom every year to inspire and teach students that they, too, have the power to change the world with their actions, words, and achievements. My classroom is a rainbow of skin tones, as all of my students are children of color, but my heart breaks when students draw themselves and can only choose from 2 options - is my skin brown or peach? In most cases, it is neither. Please allow my students to draw themselves as I see them - beautiful and just the way they are. Multicultural crayons will provide my students with a way to properly represent themselves and their families and friends in drawings so that they can be proud of what they look like and where they came from.
