Although I teach mostly honor and AP level students, I am amazed each year at the amount of students that don't read a book! Yes - you read that correctly! Even teaching students who are upper-level academically, I still find that they very rarely read a book unless it is required reading for one of their classes. And even then, most of the time students admit to skimming the book, skipping chapters, or finding summaries online. As an avid reader, this breaks my heart! My goal for the 2021-2022 school year is to have students in my honors and AP classes read at least one historical novel. Instead of doing a generic whole class book study, I want students to be able to have flexibility in choosing what they want to read. While they have access to our school library and a local library, students are not utilizing those resources. The books I have chosen for this project are all interesting and dig deeper into specific historical events that we don't have time to cover in class. I have a fair amount of books already that I have gotten mostly from thrift stores and used book stores, but I still find my selection lacking. This project will help me have a large variety of books so I will be able to suggest a book for each student to read that they will enjoy (and if not, I will have other books for them to choose from with this project!) I know that these books will be a great start to my classroom library!
