On behalf of class K-240, I would like to thank you for your generous gift to Donors Choose. Our classroom received a combination of digital accessories such as headphones, stylus pens, and chargers as well as other supplies including dry erase boards and markers, pens, playdough, and pouches to carry their materials to school on in-person days and keep them organized at home. Students who could otherwise not afford such materials had these items for their use at the start of the school year.

As you know, I began this project to ease the transition between in-school and remote learning by providing hands-on materials that will allow my students to learn in an engaging way. The materials have been crucial in providing the academic support they need to learn both at home and in school. My students are excited and eager to use their materials everyday. Materials like playdough have been very useful in helping my students recognize and spell their names. In addition, I have noticed my students, whom many are English Language Learners, use more language during play as they invent stories about their playdough creations or refer to things they do or see in their everyday lives. The individual dry erase board and marker have been effective as well. Many of our word work and math lessons involve recording answers or solving problems. Their responses allow me to see who grasps the concepts and who does not. Students love using them because they are fun and mistakes made during practice can be easily brushed away. Lastly, the stylus pens opened a whole new digital interactive world for my students. Learning how to draw and write is already challenging for many kindergarteners. Using their fingers for drawing and writing on the Ipad is not practical or beneficial in learning how to write on a device. The stylus pens reinforce pencil grips and help make drawing and writing more legible.

For the most part, our class has transitioned successfully to blended learning. Now the real work is about to begin as we head into our Super Reader and Writing for Readers units. In reading, they are using their strategies or "powers" to not just story tell but now they are trying to use patterns, high frequency words, and one-to-one correspondence to make toward conventional reading. At the same time, as they are starting to be able to read their books, they are starting to be aware that others need to read their writing and that they need to be able to read their own writing. Students are stretching sounds and using their high frequency words to read and they are also using these same strategies to help them write. In order to achieve the goals of these units, I plan to continue to use the above strategies to develop strong readers and writers.

Finally, I would like to offer a special thanks to Donors Choose. The partnership we have with them is one of the big reasons why our class has been successful this year. I look forward to the continued collaboration and partnership in this important endeavor.

Happy holidays and all the best to you in the year to come!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lee

Thank you for your recent donations. I am very moved by your generous gift to my project. Without your support, I wouldn't be able to serve my students and my community. You make my work possible.

If you have any questions on how your donation is being put to use or you want additional information on how to continue your support, please let me know.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lee

This fall, NYC public schools will be starting the year with a blended model of in-school and remote learning. Since my students will spend majority of their learning time in distance learning, I am trying to explore new ways to support them academically. Many of my students and their families are unfamiliar with technology. My project aims to ease the transition between in-school and remote learning and provide students the supports they need to succeed at home. My hope is to supply students with a combination of digital accessories that will increase their participation in distance learning and hands-on materials that will allow students to continue learning in an engaging way.
