My current classroom iPads have iOS 9.3.5 for the operating system and cannot be updated any further. The most current operating system for an iPad is iOS 14.7.1 as of today. Due to the inability to update the iPads anymore, I cannot install newer educational applications that would benefit my students. I do not have access to all the account information on the iPads because they were inherited from a former teacher. I have tried to reset the iPads, but have not been completely successful which also makes it difficult to install new apps or update existing apps. What are the benefits of having classroom iPads? They are a great reinforcer for students to work for, with educational games that they love to play, and are better than just watching YouTube on the Chromebooks. They can be used for independent work with apps that can support reading, handwriting, math, and social-emotional skills. As the teacher, I can control more of what my students do on the iPad than I can on a Chromebook. I can set limits to the time a student uses the iPad and what app they can use through Guided Access. I can limit the maximum volume a student can use as well as limit the websites that can be accessed. I am not able to do that with the Chromebooks. It is also easier to use iPads and flexible seating such as a bean bag.
