Much uncertainty surrounds public education as we near the start of the new school year. As teachers, we strive to ensure that each of our students will have access to relevant, relatable and engaging books that they see themselves and their community reflected in. If sufficient funds are raised, this project will afford each of our seventh grade students their own copy of 'Lucky Broken Girl' by Ruth Behar. We know that exposing our students to extraordinary novels written by authors of color, plays an important role in their pedagogy as well as having a positive influence on their identity formation. 'Lucky Broken Girl' tells the story of a Cuban-American girl living with her family in New York City, where she falls victim to a life-altering car accident. Her injuries keep her at home for several months, a reality not unlike what our students have faced during the global pandemic. The novel tells an uplifting and empowering story that we feel our students will relate to, draw comparisons with and stimulate meaningful conversations on various social issues currently all around us.
