Jolly Holiday with Mary Poppins!
Funded Oct 16, 2018We are particularly excited to get our hands on the new book Donor's Choose helped us get...Mary Poppins! We are grateful for your generosity to our classroom.
This book has been fun to read! It is part realistic fiction and part fantasy which makes it relatable to students, but fun in a " Harry Potter" sort of way. Every morning we read a chapter as a whole class and then get into our book clubs to discuss the meaning with each other and work in our notebooks.
As a final activity when we are done reading the book, we will watch the movie and have a British tea party to celebrate. It will be helpful to compare and contrast the movie with the book and determine differences!
Thanks again!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. F.
Let's Read about the Cheese!
Funded Oct 13, 2016We are so excited to have begun our GREAT CHEESE novel study! So far it is a fast paced and funny book about a band of mice that have a comfortable and easy life who pursue solving a mystery for a little bit of adventure. In class we are using our reading notebooks to explore vocabulary, plot, characters, author's purpose and make connections between the text and ourselves, other books and the world around us. Some fun activities we've done are cheese tasting and cheese poems to go along with this plus we've researched the history of cheese using Chromebooks. This novel study is a fun addition to enrich our reading groups time in Third Grade!”

iPads for Robots
Funded Oct 9, 2015Our class is SO thrilled to have the Apple iPads in our classroom! We not only love having this technology to use apps and educational programs, but we are excited to use them with our LEGO Mindstorms kit to make robots and experiment with the basics of engineering.
I made a rotating schedule so the students share the use of the ipads equally over a course of 12 days. They can use various apps but our class favorites are: Brainpop Jr., National Geographic for Kids, PBS kids, the webcam at the Penguin exhibit at the Academy of Sciences in San Francisco and of course the Mindstorm app.
The students have formed groups and spend time working on robot creations weekly and are learning to use the iPad Mindstorm app to move their robot. You can see in one of the photos Charlotte is opening the app (it is linked via Bluetooth) and then Etai is almost running the robot off the table! You can also see kids making LEGO creations to prepare for their robot making plus the Mindstorm kit in action. Finally, Sarayu is showing us how she uses the iPad for her bi-weekly turn.
This has been such a blessing to our students! What a fun and creative way to engage the children and give them something different and exciting to thing about. Thank you sincerely.
We hope to receive our second Mindstorms kit soon so we can have more groups working on robots! Fortunately for us, we have a parent volunteer that runs our local LEGO Robotics club and she has helped us organize our lessons.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. F.
