The 20-21 school year promises to look like no other in my 26-year teaching career. My classroom library of thousands of books may no longer be available to students.
Although our on-line selection of books has expanded, I personally believe that there is no substitute for actual print material in a student's hands.
Scholastic Scope Magazine is a 32-page magazine filled with non-fiction, short stories, drama, and poetry, which comes out every month Aug-May. Every student receives their own magazine, so no sharing of resources will be needed. The magazine is also available on-line to my students on their iPads, and will even read the articles to them with the push of a button.
My students will be in class one day per week to start the year. After that, no one really knows what this year will bring. We need to be prepared to transition between hybrid, remote, and in-person whenever we are told. Scholastic Scope magazine will make that transition easier for my students, as they will already have, in their hands, the resource they need for a month of learning.
For the teacher, Scope Magazine comes with a host of already-prepared materials. If you know me, you know my teaching won't stop with those packaged materials, however, and I plan on finding plenty of ways to make the readings in Scope Magazine come to life for my students.
Scope also sometimes includes articles on current topics as well. Seventh grade is the perfect time to open students' eyes to the world around them, and this year will be full of plenty of discussion-worthy events! Scholastic Scope does the research and provides the rich resources for me, so that I can focus on the important part: building relationships with my students, and making their learning relevant and engaging!
