One of the most important parts of a kindergarten day is read alouds. Read alouds are used during reading instruction, as well as to introduce various topics in writing, math, science, and social studies. They allow students to be exposed to vocabulary and information that they might not typically be exposed to at home. In my classroom, we do at least two read alouds each day. When I read a story to my class, it is one of the few times during the day that I have every single student engaged. Not all students are read to at home, and even if they are, students love hearing stories they can relate to and learn from. I love reading to my class! Due to the current situation with COVID-19, we will no longer be able to sit at the carpet together in a group when I do a read aloud because the students will be socially distanced throughout the room. This means students won't be able to see the illustrations in our books unless I walk around to each student. This will make read alouds longer, and I will most likely lose student attention if I am not reading and have not gotten to them to show the illustration yet. My other option is to share a YouTube video of someone else reading the book aloud. Students do not respond as well to that because they are on devices and using technology a lot more than they used to. Flipping back to certain pages as reference points or pausing to make a connection is also more difficult when watching a video. Getting a document camera would allow me to continue to do read alouds in my classroom with actual books. Thank you so much to anyone who is able to donate!
