Books! Books!
Funded Sep 13, 2020I hope all is well with each of you! I want to take a moment to thank you for your contribution to our classroom. You supplied us with the funds needed to get a library suitable to the development of three-year old children. Our classroom looks different this year, due to the Covid pandemic. Many of the communal areas, such as the library and cozy area, have been utilized differently to keep children socially distant.
Yet, thanks to you, books abound in our classroom! They are on all the shelves and cases so that the children have access to them throughout the day. Since the books in our new library are board books, they are much easier to disinfect with a wipe, so we always have books available for our young students.
Goldilocks and The Three Bears, is a favorite! They love hearing this story. I think because the book is about family, it keeps them so engaged. They retell the story during read aloud and pay particular attention to the wee baby bear, the medium momma, and the large daddy. In doing so they are learning about size, and they love to change voices for each bear based on size and draw pictures. In the slide I include a child with a drawing of the three bears on a dry erase board.
Another story they like to hear frequently is, The Napping House by Audrey Wood. In this story a grandma and a child are joined by several family pets: a dog, cat, mouse, and flea! Lol, it is a great way to develop a child's ability to sequence events. They love guessing what will happen next!
Lastly, there is the book by Eric Carle, From Head to Toe. This story introduces children to basic anatomy, and they begin to see how living things are similar and different. It also incorporates a lot of movement. For example, the giraffe stretches its neck, and the camel bends its knee. The children do the same, pantomiming the movement in the story and learning new vocabulary as they do so.
These are just a few descriptions of how my class benefits from your kindness. I wish you could visit and see it for yourself! I am lucky because I get to be a part of it every day. Thank you for giving us such a fulfilling opportunity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kelly
