Vertical Whiteboards for Thinking Math Classrooms
Funded Jul 22, 2023I am blown away by your generosity!!! I cannot wait to open the box with my colleagues and students at the start of the upcoming school year.
Vertical non-permanent surfaces are a great way to get student up out of their desks. Students can record thoughts quickly, and modify their work with ease using whiteboards. The research of Peter Liljedahl (2015) states, “groups that worked on vertical whiteboards, demonstrated more thinking classroom behavior - persistence, discussion, participation, and knowledge mobility – than any of the other type of work surfaces.“ When students are working in groups out of their desks, the vertical surfaces allow them to see what other groups are doing, and all members are held accountable. Groups are more likely to share knowledge with one another and surrounding groups when they are up out of their desks. Teachers can quickly assess student understanding when work is placed on a vertical surface.
It is my belief that with access to these materials our students will be better equipped to investigate, recognize, and validate multiple paths to correct answers; to articulate and defend advantages, and disadvantages of ideas and solutions; to respectfully debate to find a final “best answer.“ These are all skills required in today’s fast growing industries in occupations. Your generosity will better the educational experience of my students, present and future!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Niziak
