  • Ms. Lanham's World

    Funded Aug 15, 2023

Thank you so very much for donating to items that I needed to help make my school year successful. There were many small things that you provided such as colored pencils, crayons, poster boards, etc. that we use for projects associated with what we read or write and you donating to that cause allowed less money spent out of my own project for those materials.

The printer has been very useful when I have need to print NHS certificates and letters. I do not now need to send those items to the public printer, and can print those with my personal computer.

The stool allows me to sit comfortably amongst my student and have read or have conversations with them.

The items like the Sharpie pens again were less items I had to buy with my own money.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lanham

  • Exploring the World Through Words

    Funded Aug 5, 2020

In my class, I try to teach diversity and acceptance. I do not believe it is my place to change someone's mind and how they view someone or something, but I do believe exposing my students to different cultures through books is helpful in understanding each other.

In this book, The House on Mango Street, we are able to look at someone that is Latina and the issues she faces growing up. Sometimes in life, it just takes exposure to understand where a person is coming from. The ability to understand how different races and cultures handle stresses, celebrations, worries and all that comes with life helps us develop as individuals. I like for my students to get lost in books. I want my students to understand people, but also understand that the world can be explored through words that have been written in books.

We, as a class, will enjoy exploring Esperanza's life. We will enjoy analyzing her development and situations and learning about her as we read through her life in The House on Mango Street.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lanham

My students will be able to explore through reading. We, as a class, will read and then push our minds to analyze what we have read. We will work on thinking critically and apply what we read to beyond what is written in black and white. The House on Mango Street is broken into short stories, which allows us to take a different approach to how we break it down, whether it be all at once or periodically throughout the school year. We will work on creating the ability to think critically and analytically, which helps in more than just the classroom, but in life as well.
