  • Piano Party: Help Get the BES Music Room More Pianos!

    I cannot believe it! We are fully funded!!! My students are going to be SO happy to hear we have working pianos, my 5th graders especially.   • Music Madness: Xylophone Edition

  • A New Xylophone for BES!

    Thank you so much for your contribution to the BES music room! We've had our new xylophone for a few months now, and the kids have been enamored by it. They'd never seen a brand new instrument like this before, and it was really exciting for all involved to be able to be exposed to something like that! Our new xylophone is used daily in almost every single grade level. This project has brought us one step closer to having an instrument for every student to play!   • Musical Books for Bilingual Students

    Thank you so much for funding my book project!! I cannot wait to read these books with my students. They love being read to, but I never had enough books to keep it interesting. The few books I did have weren't musically relevant at all... so I read them sparingly.

    Thanks to your patronage, I now have quite the musical book collection! There are loads of musical topics to draw from in all of these books, along with different aspects of musical history. One of my books, for example, follows a young African American boy who follows his dreams to become a professional trombone player. It's important to me to show my students that they can be whatever they want to be... and that's just a small example of how these books can do that.

  • Music Kits for Bilingual Students

    Thank you so much for supporting my classes by funding our music kits! They have been an excellent tool during both our virtual and in-person learning in these strange times. The students get to actually make music during music class without having to worry about the fear of spreading germs, because each student gets their own kit. We get to scrape the noodles, shake the eggs, click the rhythm sticks... As these kits have benefited K-2 students, you can imagine how exciting that is for them :).

    All of my kiddos in virtual learning brought their kits to class every single day. They always had an enormous grin on their faces as they took out each individual piece and showed me. When I told them they got to make music with it on their own, the sound of squealing children was almost deafening. :)

    With your donation, I was also able to make some extra kits that I can use in the classroom for those students who do not have kits in building. I've even been able to use them with older kids after disinfecting them! They've loved every minute. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for your support in these troubling times. :)”

These items on my list will be used for the overall health and safety of my students in person (hand sanitizer and Kleenex), while the rest will be used to make individual music kits for each student. In the age of COVID-19, making music can be incredibly challenging. I don't want to deprive students of an excellent music education due to COVID-19, so individual music kits will give them opportunities to make music without having to worry about the spread of germs. Each item on my list serves a purpose. Pool noodles will be cut in half and into smaller chunks to make "sand scraper" instruments, while the plastic eggs will be filled with rice to make handheld shakers. The wooden dowel rods will be rhythm sticks and help them learn how to keep a steady beat. Finally, the bingo chips will be used as movable note heads on an individual staff, which will also be a part of the kit.
