Learning Through Play-Doh Lines

Funded Sep 24, 2022

My kindergarten students were so excited to receive their play-dough. You should have seen their excitement when I let them choose their own color. They were thrilled to know they will get to keep their container of play-dough at the end of the year. Because they know they get to keep it, they are taking extra good care of it.

Our first art activity using the play-dough was creating coils to make different kinds of lines. Once students saw they could make different lines, they discovered they could create letters. Many began using the play-dough to write their names and other words. They also realized they could make numbers and began making play-dough math problems.

This lesson extended into our shape unit. Students used play-dough lines to create different shapes. Their creativity really blossomed as they explored all the different objects they could sculpt with their play-dough coil shapes.

Having the bright colored play-dough in kindergarten art class has really helped learning come alive for my students!!”

With gratitude,
