The current classroom is a large space but with all the desks there is barely any area to create and explore. The flexible seating model will give my students the opportunity to perform, and practice healthy behaviors and skills. I would like my students to spend a good portion of the class collaborating with each other, and exploring health concepts. this is why a flexible seating arrangement is a better choice. our current seating does not allow for the movement that is required to truly expand learning. For example, My students will be creating Public service advertisements as a assessment to their substance abuse unit. I want them to have the area in the classroom to film, draw, plan and collaborate as a group. One more example of how this table and chair set will help is when I have activity stations. I do this in a lab format in my class at different times. in specific I have a station lesson in my nutrition unit. students will walk to different stations and calculate the amount of sugar in common snacks. After they do the calculation they will create a model of each snack and compare and contrast the amounts of sugar in each snack. I will have the students actually bag up the sugar so they physically see the amount in front of them. I have many lessons that simply do not work well with the current classroom set up that I have. Finally, I utilize discussion in my classroom on a daily basis. I love to encourage critical thinking. I have already purchased a rug for us to have circle format discussions on. I will not be able to do this with desks in my current classroom.
