Creating robust distance learning kits requires more than just paper and pencil! Now more than ever, students need a peaceful place to learn where they can focus on their assignments, while also nurturing their social-emotional needs. In the classroom, my students are provided with many things that families often don't have at home. Now that they are learning from home on a daily basis, I want to be sure students have headphones to help them focus, fidgets/stress balls to calm anxiety and increase productivity, and watercolors/paper to be sure they have a creative outlet. Some students may also need a work surface such as lap desks to ensure they have an appropriate place to do assignments. Additionally, I want to provide a small potted succulent plant to each student. Research shows that plants improve students' mental well-being, encourage responsibility, and also aid in a number of learning opportunities. Having a common goal of caring for plants will also foster a strong classroom community. I am confident that with these additional items, my students will thrive in their at-home learning!
