The past year in society, my eyes have been opened to racial inequity like never before. The area which my students are growing up in is very similar to that which I grew up in: minimally diverse with few opportunities to see or experience people and cultures different than our own. These books will help my students diversify their lives by reading about the lives of people who are different from them. Teaching students about inclusivity and diversity is a crucial step for bettering the world around us, now and in the future. By providing these books for my students, their learning will expand beyond our social studies lessons and into their daily conversations and interactions with others. My hope is that these books help my students to realize that all people are important and should be valued, regardless of race, religion, gender, nationality, etc. Help me to teach a generation of students that understand equity, equality and diversity like no generation before. Students need to see protagonists and experiences in books that are different from theirs to fully understand the world around them.
