First graders want to know more about the world around them. They always have questions about science and are always engaged in discussions revolving around real-world issues. Unfortunately, many of our Science and Social Studies classroom materials are quickly dated and are no longer relevant. Young students deserve to have accurate, relevant, and engaging reading materials that help them learn about what is going on in our world right now. This project will do just that. My first grade students will each receive their own magazines every week. The articles are written at a level that helps beginning readers to read independently and to engage their minds with pertinent topics for their age group. After reading and dissecting the articles with their classmates, students will get to take their magazines home to share with their families. This project benefits our classroom community of young readers and aspiring leaders AND every student's family by giving them access to high-quality, age-appropriate Social Studies and Science reading materials all year long.
