Most of my students are students of color, and more frequently than not, they are exposed to literature written by dead white males-- not authors of color with whom they can identify. This year, I'd like to change that. I want to provide current, exciting novels that reach my students who consistently blend into the shadows as their stories are not being told with authenticity. Additionally, I want to highlight my students' heritage, discuss race and equity, show them how to read blue books come election season, and talk about how the young people of America-- ALL young people-- have a voice and can educate themselves and vote to make a difference. My students deserve to read stories by people who are like them, about characters they can identify with, and learn thematic lessons that will reflect our difference in skin tone, but similarities in the human experience. Thank you for considering this project as one to fund. I appreciate your time and generosity, and know that my students will too.
