I taught a classroom filled with beautiful young people all coming from different backgrounds. Although my students struggled with social interactions, they all learned to love each other and respect one another no matter what. It was not easy to teach a classroom acceptance, respect and kindness but we spent months learning to care for one another and hold each other accountable in the classroom. Unfortunately with school closures and the need for things to be done virtually, my students were uninterested and unmotivated due to the lack of tactile objects that we were accustom to. Since we transitioned to remote learning, we struggled as a class to have enough tactile materials ton continue our learning of spelling, letter identification as well as reading. I was stuck making videos of myself counting manipulatives and showing my beautiful student's of color storybooks filled with characters that do not look like them. As if learning how to add or read wasn't hard enough, now I must show them stories that do not represent them or their cultures! The materials on my project list will be delivered to my students' home to keep, read and explore daily. I will dedicate myself to continue to teach them about diversity and the value we have as a person of color and how we support one another while remaining respectful and open minded. Please help me show my students their value and relevance in literature as well as everyday life. It is never too early to begin teaching young minds the importance of diversity and respect and these books will help me do so! I will now share with you, as I always tell my students , we must have courage and be kind. Thank you!
