These diverse books will help my students connect with the characters and stories that they are reading. I have a diverse classroom library where students can read and browse books as they please, but the students always asked if they could take the books home to read with their family. Because of the uncertainty of the upcoming school year, I wanted to assure that my students would have books that they could take home, much like a city library or a school library. I am implementing a book bag program where students will choose two books to take home and bring them back weekly to switch them out for new books. One book will be on their reading level and their second choice will be a free choice. These books will be included in the free choice section as many of these books are a higher reading level than 1st grade. My goal is that these books will be read and enjoyed at home with the family, which promotes not only the importance of reading as children will see that reading is done outside of the classroom, but it will also instill a joy of reading.
