Exploring Cuban History Through Poetry
Funded Jan 14, 2024I hope this note finds you doing wonderfully. I just wanted to drop you a line to say the biggest thank you for your incredibly kind donation to our classroom! Your generosity in providing copies of "The Surrender Tree" by Margarita Engle for my students has truly made our whole year!
I can't tell you how excited the students were when I unveiled the books. Their eyes lit up with excitement, and I could practically feel the energy buzzing in the room as they eagerly flipped through the pages. It's moments like these that remind me why I love being an educator – seeing the joy and curiosity sparked by a good book is simply priceless.
Your support has opened up a world of possibilities for our students. Not only are they getting to delve into an engaging story, but they're also gaining a deeper understanding of history and the human experience. Plus, they're having a blast doing it! I can already tell that "The Surrender Tree" is going to be a favorite among our crew.
I am just so grateful for your thoughtfulness and generosity. Your donation is so much more than just books – it's a gift of knowledge, inspiration, and endless possibilities for our students. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kaplan
Expanding My Classroom Library
Funded Nov 30, 2022Thank you again for your kind donations to get my class 20 copies of both The Giver by Lois Lowry and American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang! My students helped me build my new bookshelves when they arrived and, as they helped me organize, they were so excited to see some classics and colorful graphic novels in the mix.
My students read The Giver last term - some absolutely loved it, some were frustrated by the cliffhanger ending, and some felt all of the above. I taught this novel in conjunction with the history teacher, so my students were able to regularly discuss connections between The Giver and American government. When students started quoting Hobbes and Locke to me in class, I knew we were doing something right!
Right now they're greatly enjoying American Born Chinese. While we are using this text to prep for the MAAP test, we're also discussing character development and how that affects the major themes of humility, friendship, and being an outsider in the United States.
Thanks again for the donation, my students and I appreciate it!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Kaplan
