This project/unit of study creates an awareness of how those in poverty must shoulder the additional burden of suffering from the lack of a universal healthcare system in the United States. In "Tightrope: Americans Reaching for Hope," Kristof and WuDunn humanize the plight of Americans by allowing them to tell their stories of the interrelation of the cycle of poverty, the lower quality of life and earlier death, and the abuse of self and others. The learning outcome is simple: to create EMPATHY for those who suffer from poverty and from a system that doesn't address the social determinants of health. The reading of this book and giving personal testimony for how they felt reading it will help to formulate a non-judgmental approach for engaging those in poverty as they move towards a career in the medical field.
