With the goal of empowering students to be allies for their marginalized peers, this fall we are starting a once-a-month lunch and learn where students voluntarily read/discuss social justice issues. Topics addressed will be xenophobia, racial and economic equality, and LGBTQIA+ rights. One month we discuss a reading, the following month community partners participate in a lecture/discussion/question and answer session. Depending on COVID-19 restrictions, sessions may be in-person or Zoom. To complement our social justice lunch and learn sessions, we want to purchase related books for the 7th/8th grade reading classrooms, with our goal that the texts will foster even more conversations on these critical issues. The books will be available to all 7th/8th students to check out (as our building library is not open full-time) and will result in more inclusive reading libraries. We have selected curated books recommended by such credible sources as Teaching Tolerance, Teaching for Change, and the National Network of State Teachers of the Year.
