I have been given the opportunity to make adjustments to the curriculum that is used for my students and in the course of that, I realized that if I wanted greater student engagement in the curriculum, that I had to get them excited about the books being taught. This book will help me and by extension, my students - engage in a deeper level of conversation about - racism, justice, activism, and identity, issues currently plaguing the communities in which they live.
Even though we are not sure how long school will be virtual, I want students to be able to have some semblance of normalcy in their educational lives. For them, receiving this book to read and the journaling supplies will mean that they are able to not only engage more deeply in the text but also be exposed to increased opportunities to write about all that they learn and how what they learn can and will impact them.
Students will be exposed to lessons designed to get them thinking, talking and writing about topics covered in this book. More importantly, these lessons will allow all students to engage with the unit being taught in whatever way is easiest for them, while at the same time allowing me to gauge their progress towards improved academic proficiency.
