I want my students to leave my classroom not only knowing how to read and understand books but to LOVE reading. Remember when you were in school and a teacher would assign you a boring old passage in order for them to teach you main idea or some other standard. Flash forward 20 years and you now hate reading books because it brings you back to that painfully boring experience. What if we were able to give students the opportunity to learn grade level comprehension standards while listening and reading AMAZING book? Books that captivate even the most resistant of readers. With these new books, my students will be able to listen to and choose from a variety of books that will allow them to fall in love with reading. Every book placed in our classroom library will be used during our read aloud time. As we read these books together we laugh, we cry, we become confused and sometimes we are even angry. Reading together, and having students listen, allows them to see how they should read with inflection, tone and overall becoming a better reader. It also gives them a goal to work towards when they hear themselves reading. One of my favorite authors, Kate DiCamillo once said, "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore, or a duty. It should be offered as a gift." With these books you are giving students gift after gift. You are not only giving them a physical book to fall in love with but also the opportunity to fall in love and develop a deep passion for reading.
