Through the use of these multicultural books, students will see themselves as the main characters who strive for change in our world. For those students who identify with different cultures, these books will act as windows into the lives of their peers. I plan to read many of these books aloud to my class as well as use them in small book groups. These books will reflect their own lives as well as introduce them to the experiences of the students around them. When children don't see themselves in the books that they read, they have difficulty identifying with a book or become uninterested because it is not about their life. These diverse books will increase their reading engagement and educate them about different ethnic groups. I plan to facilitate brave conversations with my students about challenging topics such as race, culture, family structure and religion. Teaching cultural competence and critical consciousness are essential components in education today.
