Due to our deepening understanding of racial inequities, this is a concept being addressed across the country by tons of educational experts, including an article from National Educators Association (NEA). One fascinating idea in this article is that of ‘mirrors and windows’. This suggests that books with characters of color are mirrors for our own students of color to see themselves as part of the story. The idea of windows is about how these stories build empathy in our white students. In other words, we ALL need to be reading diverse books in order to build a more just world!
