At Wylam Elementary, we provide every student with the opportunity to learn music. We are a Title One school and most of my students would not have the opportunity to participate in music if we did not provide it for them. These experiences provide the students with an outlet for their creativity, energy, and intelligence that allows them to excel in other subjects and areas of life. I teach Kindergarten through third grade music and fourth through fifth grade band. While the fourth and fifth graders have band instruments to share in the classroom to learn, the younger students do not have this opportunity. We want to bring engagement, interest, and creativity to our music program, especially for the younger students who cannot access our larger instruments. The younger students deserve the opportunity to learn music just as the older ones do. Utilizing classroom percussion, the learning opportunities for learning are endless. They will provide the students with the exciting experience of playing an instrument and open opportunities for creating music through improvisation. These instruments are also easy to adapt for different projects and clean between uses. Classroom instruments will give our students the boost they need to continue learning music and to be even more creative. We have created a 5 year plan that will allow us to purchase new instruments for our collection each year. This year, we aim to start with a classroom set of rhythm sticks and various percussion instruments. The next few years we will aim to get Orff instruments, tunable tubanos, and various other percussion instruments. Help me bring music to my students.
