As a Pre-K Teacher, I use books to promote and reinforce important skills and lessons daily. Books are not only a fantastic tool for children to learn literacy and math skills, but they also model social-emotional skills as well. However, a classroom library is useless if it does not represent the students it serves. It is so important that our students are able to see themselves represented in the books we read. The Pre-K students at our school are primarily children of immigrants. Between the four campuses located across D.C., we have families representing over 40 countries and over 10 languages. Our classrooms promote and celebrate diversity and inclusivity, and we need the books we read to reflect those same messages. Because we still will have a distance learning option for our fall semester, we want to be sure every Pre-K student has home access to a book that promotes inclusivity and diversity. The #ISeeMe campaign allows us to provide students with a book to add to their at-home library. These books will help students embrace culture and language familiar to them, represented by characters that look and sound like them. We will buy a set of books for each Pre-K classroom so students have access to the same book as their classmates and teachers. Teachers will be able to provide virtual storytime and plan activities students can participate and follow along at home!
