If this project is funded, my students will have almost 50 books on their classroom shelf featuring characters that look like them. My goal as a reading teacher has always been to create a culture of readers. Students often prefer reading books that feature characters that look like them and/or face the same issues that they are facing. Students want and need to read books about characters that look like them-that accurately depict history and the issues they regularly face. Sixth grade students are given thirty minutes a day to read books of their own choosing. While my district provides some titles, I feel that it is very important to expand my classroom library to most accurately represent my students. I am an avid reader. I became a reading teacher to encourage students to love reading as much as I do. One reason students do not enjoy reading is that they claim "nobody in books looks like me/acts like me/has the same problems as me." Hopefully, with the acquisition of these titles, I can encourage the reluctant reader to pick up one of these titles and begin to see that there are, actually, books about all different types of students.
