Inspire Us!
Funded Jun 2, 2021Thank you for donating to my classroom library and book sets! I teach a very diverse group of students that live in a residential treatment facility. Most of them have come from very hard backgrounds and have dealt with lots of trauma in their lives. I have been working to build my library with books they can relate to, whether it be race, religion, sexuality, gender or trauma. It is very important to me that my students can find a book that they can identify with and help them to not feel so alone in their world. Your donations have helped me to give that to them. We do independent reading once a week for class and students respond to journal prompts. Aside from that we have 10 minute breaks in between classes. It makes my heart so happy that instead of getting out of their desks and wandering the classroom they choose to reach for their books and read the entire 10 minutes of break!
I choose a novel to read aloud with my class also. They follow along and do comprehension and vocabulary questions. It is fun to see them engage in group activites.”

Funded Sep 12, 2020Diversity is a very important topic in my classroom as I teach a very diverse population of students. My students live in a residential group home placement. They do not have much access to the public, including a library. My students love to read so it has been very important to build my library and provide books my students can identify with and connect to.
In my classroom I make reading a very important thing. I love to make comfortable spots for my students read. I encourage them to find books that they can connect to and enjoy. Reading is a nice relaxing time for them. I have made comfortable reading spots in my classroom. We do independent reading time at least once a week where the students can grab their books and a spot and read for an hour. While they read I write journal questions on the board for them to answer when they are done reading. They are also encouraged to discuss their book.
Before Donor's Choose, I had a good selection of books but not enough for the diverse students I teach. I have Native Americans, Black students, asian, LBGTQ, and many other cultures and some disabilities. Since getting the books the students have been very happy to be able to read and connect to books that highlight their culture. I have seen an increase in how much my students enjoy reading and want to read because of that.”
