I have chosen a variety of math supplies, which correspond with our state learning standards, to make learning more visible and engaging for my students. The magnetic manipulatives and 120 floor chart will aid in whole-group instruction. I plan to utilize these tools by allowing students to participate in demonstration of our lesson. This approach will give students practice and an opportunity to engage in math talks, which is so important to cement their knowledge of these math concepts. In addition to these supplies, I have selected some flexible seating options. My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that helps them stay engaged in their learning. It is hard for kids to stay rigidly seated in a desk/chair combination for long hours--flexible seating allows students to get out their natural wiggles and remain focused. The clipboards, whiteboard erasers, and dry erase pockets will be used while students are working independently from these flexible locations.
