Think about the books you remember growing up... Did you see people like you in those books? Did you see a fair representation of the world around you? Was the view of the oppressed celebrated in these books? Did you see people of all cultures? Did you see families built through adoption or children with gay and lesbian parents? Did you read about gender equality and strong woman? Did you read about characters questioning their identity? I want every one of my students to be able to answer YES to each of these questions when they leave my classroom. Picture books are the most powerful tool to open minds and begin meaningful conversations about critical topics facing our children each day. I plan to weave these books into our daily lessons about theme, poetry, making inferences and analyzing plot. By doing so I will create a classroom community that builds empathy and provides a path toward acceptance and understanding. Being purposeful about the books we use to introduce and practice skills can be a small step toward a brighter more accepting future for our children.
