Most of what we read daily in our lives is non-fiction. News, street signs, emails, articles, and so much more. Yet, most of what is available to students in early grades is fiction. More so, fiction is what is interests them. Who doesn't want to read about fairies and talking animals all day long? However, non-fiction promotes success in reading beyond those early grades by expanding vocabulary, aiding second-language learners, offering solutions to real-world problems, and so much more! Non-fiction can also help promote reading successes amongst struggling readers, as they can use background knowledge and context clues to help understand the meanings of new words. So why does non-fiction make up only 10% of what elementary students are reading? My goal is to provide readers with a classroom library that is at least 50% non-fiction to help promote a love for non-fiction, as well as promote all the successes that reading non-fiction can bring! With your help, we can give students this opportunity and hope to instill a life-long love for reading-to-learn! Thank you so much in advance for your donation!
