We're Learning to Control Our Emotions
Funded Jul 18, 2023Thank you for your generosity. This project was near and dear to my heart. Over the past several years, I have noticed that students are having more and more trouble positively expressing themselves, so I was excited with how quickly the project received funding. Thank you for your kindness.
We started our school year reading A Little Spot of Feelings - a story about being an emotion detective! We learned about how our body reacts when we have feelings - good ones and not-so-good ones, and how to name that feeling either by word or by the color they are feeling at that moment. Then, we read A Little Spot of Emotion Coach. This read-aloud helped us identify more emotions and feelings, but also gave us some strategies to use when we start to feel some not-so-good emotions. Our class is getting good at DICE (Deep breath, Identify emotion, Choose a helpful reaction, Explore why the feeling happened).
Once we had the opportunity to learn about our feelings and emotions and practice naming them, we put that learning into practice by playing games (Don't Break the Ice is a favorite) and building with Legos. Students have become pros at naming their feelings -" I feel angry when you take a Lego from me." Having students name and explain their feelings to their friends has decreased the number of conflicts within our classroom.
While we have not had an opportunity to read all of the books or play all of the games yet, the learning we achieved around identifying our emotions and feelings has contributed overwhelmingly to a successful start to our school year.
Again, thank you for your kindness. The impact these games and books will have a lasting effect on these students.”

Funded Jun 30, 2020Thank you for your generosity. This was my first project with Donor's Choose. When I saw that people had contributed to the funding, I was overwhelmed with your kindness. It was an exciting moment when the boxes began arriving. The teachers that were working at the school were anxious to see the books that I had chosen.
While we have not had an opportunity to use the books together in our class, we have had the opportunity to use them virtually. Two of their favorites were Mixed A Colorful Story by Arree Chung and All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kauffman. They gave All Are Welcome a round of applause when I was finished reading it. When I asked them why they enjoyed that book so much their responses were " It's just like our class." "Everyone is special."
Again, thank you for your kindness. The impact these books will have on the students with be long felt.”
With gratitude,
Ms. O'Neil
