This school year will be unlike any other. As America navigates this pandemic and has more conversations about systemic racism, our kids have been watching and have been directly impacted.
This school year students will need time to heal, process, and reflect on everything they've witnessed and been a part of in 2020.
In most traditional curriculums, racism and inequality in general are often tiptoed around or are all together avoided. The books in my project will be used to strengthen the curriculums I teach, filling their holes with high quality literature that amplifies the voices and experiences of people of color and other marginalized communities. They feature diverse characters that are representative of my students and their experiences. The books will be read aloud and used to foster conversations about inequality and will engage students in social-emotional learning. They will aid students in unpacking and understanding the social movement taking place in their community and our country as a whole. There are 2 books I will use that explore antiracist teaching strategies that will allow me to improve my pedagogy and learn how to embed these strategies in all of my lessons. This is the type of instruction my students need and deserve, especially after everything they have witnessed in 2020.
The folders, markers, crayons, pencil boxes, and pencils will make sure that once we are learning in person, every student has these materials available to them at all times. Typically students share these materials but due to COVID, that will not be possible this year. The mini hand sanitizer bottles will make sure students can clean their hands frequently without having to share the sink each time, helping us all stay healthy and safe.
