This year we will be reading the Autobiography of Frederick Douglass and excerpts from Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. This book will give students a primary source account of the experiences of enslaved peoples, helping them to better understand the institution, it’s horrors, and the resilience of those who endured it, helping them to become critical thinking and empathetic citizens of our world. The opportunity to read this together as a class will provide a great opportunity to improve literacy and to learn how valuable primary sources are to historians.
