First Grade Readers
Funded Oct 17, 2023Thank you so much for your donations. My class is mainly composed of English Language Learners that have never gone to school in their own country. This makes it very challenging for them to learn a new language and I needed to find new resources that will help them build a vocabulary in English. I was able to do that through your donations. The eye words were really helpful when it was time to teach the sight words. Since it includes a picture and a hand motion to go with it they were able to catch on quickly. This has really helped in identifying these words when reading a book.
Due to them being English Language Learners they are not able to read completely on their own. They depend on me for most of the reading, but now I have been able to step back a little and allow them to take control with my guidance it has been amazing.”

Funded Apr 7, 2022Thank you so much for you donations. Each of the books you donated were used to engage and enrich my students learning. My students have struggled with engaging during read aloud time; but they are so eager to hear the stories from these books and they participate so much more in discussions.
I used "The Thank You Letter" in our writing block to help them learn to write thank you letters. They absolutely loved this book and most seemed to enjoy writing letters to you, the donors, and to our school's administration. The other book, that was a huge success, was "Rocket Says clean up!" We read this one for Earth Day and they were excited to start cleaning. They asked to clean up trash around our campus. I love seeing them get excited about reading, making connections with the text, and then using this excitement to make a difference in the world around them.
Other than books, I ordered a wireless keyboard which allowed me to be more mobile in the classroom. By being more mobile, I could keep the students on task and involve them more without the fear of going to the front hanging on them. I could take the keyboard to them when I wanted them to type something on the board.”

Funded Aug 31, 2021Thank you so much for your donation. I was able to use the money to buy products that have greatly impacted my students' reading journey. It has been a very challenging year to lift my students up to the grade level. Your donation facilitate the purchase of the phonics lessons, "Secret Stories". These "secrets" have noticeably improved my students' reading and writing development. In fact, an obvious indicator of the impact this product has had on the students is when they come to a word they don't know they look at our word wall for the "secret", then apply it to their reading.
I have also noticed improvements in their weekly spelling tests. I introduce the "secret" of the week; as they take the test they make hand motions to the secret. I have observed a difference with the non-readers from the beginning of the school year. They have progressed to the point now where they can read CVC words.
Parents have mentioned how their children go home and teach them the "secret"; they are beyond grateful for the growth they have seen in the children. I'm beyond proud of my students and how far they have come.”
