My AP Literature students have selected these novels for their last read in high school English: they'll be conducting their own virtual book clubs. Each novel, written by an award-winning author in the last five years, explores themes of family, identity, culture, and belonging. I would love to gift each of my students their own novel as a way to empower them to be confident in their own stories. Of course, they will use their book clubs to study universal themes in literature, but they will also get to reflect on their place in the world and their joys, losses, and triumphs as they embark onto their promising paths. My students have lost so much from their senior year of high school, and they are still so dedicated to their education. Despite the effects of the pandemic, which has disproportionately affected our hardworking community, they display commitment, resilience, and compassion on a daily basis. I want them to have a physical book to hold and turn the pages of when so much of their educational experience has been moved to screens.
