I have had great interest in the science of reading method that is widely popular in the professional development area currently. By making phonics kits using resources such as, pop its and magna tiles, my students can start decoding words by syllables and sounds, then blending sounds together to make words as they advance in their learning with the use of these materials along with dry erase markers to write the letter sounds on the magna tiles. The more advanced students are working on reading fluency, comprehension, and sentence building during our teacher table center rotation. By incorporating close reading toolkits using finger flashlights, magnifying glasses, and sticky notes, these students will be able to learn to guide their fingers along the text that they are reading, search for evidence within the text, and recording ideas or notes about the text. These are just a few of the many ideas I have to make our learning environment with small groups in reading successful and engaging for these students.
To maximize the best academic learning for our mathematics centers for my lower level students, resources to help with number sense and fact fluency are required to optimize learning. These resources include dominos and activity mats from that will include number sense, patterns, and basic addition and subtraction skills to create a basic foundation for more advanced mathematics abilities in the future. For the more advanced learners, the Jenga wooden block game and the Guess Who? game board will be utilized to practice fact fluency with a fun twist along with other activities for these games, such as addition and subtraction fact fluency, place value, telling time, and counting coins, will help in giving them more engaging activities for the standard skills that are taught during that time period.
