I attended IUPUI and learned many different things about diversity and culture in the classroom. Last year, I didn't have the chance to purchase books that included much diversity and culture. This was hard knowing my school is predominantly Hispanic, their customs and traditions matter just as much as mine. I want to be able to provide a library that explores the hard issues and topics of racism and stereotyping. I know not many teachers like to touch on this since it is a controversial subject, however children need to know and understand what is going on around them. I have looked at lists of books time and time again and I wagered back and forth whether I should just take the plunge and buy them or to give it time so I can save up money. I tried that second option this past year and I never got to it. So here I am taking initiative and making known that these children need to learn about controversial issues and should have books that relate to them. I am so excited this year to introduce my books to my students, we will all greatly appreciate your time and effort to explore the idea of providing these books for our library.
