After participating in a yearlong research project, I have learned the importance of self-efficacy and the impact it has on student achievement. My research project was centered around building a classroom community to help develop and increase student’s self-efficacy. To reach this goal, I began incorporating SEL lessons into our community circle time. Building a class community is the foundation for a strong educational learning environment where a child can feel safe, comfortable, and heard. During community circle time, I would YouTube a children's book read aloud regarding what we were going to discuss. While this worked, it is not the same as having an actual book in your hand. All year, I wished I had books and materials in my classroom that I could easily access to teach growth mindset themes and engage my students in during community circle time. My project includes a variety of books related to different growth mindset themes, encouraging self-love, and dealing with emotions. I believe all of these books will help increase my students' self-efficacy. I am very excited about the hands-on on materials chosen for this project as well. Sharing emotions is an important part of community building and can be difficult for an 8-year-old to express. For that reason, I have chosen materials that allow students to express themselves using LEGO bricks and sorting cards about the different emotions we all feel at times. It is my hope that the books we read and the discussions we have about how we feel will empower my students to want to choose a growth mindset. Even at 8 years old, these young learners are capable of learning how to deal with adversity, but they need to be supported along the way. Help me support my sweet 3rd grade students!
