The books and stories I have selected for my classroom library emphasize, represent, and acknowledge the worth of everyone with inclusive texts. These books can serve as a "mirror" that reflect my students and/or a "window" to the other perspectives and experiences that allow us to get a glimpse of what others feel. We all come from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences and it is one of the jobs of educators to uplift others and create awareness to teach our students by hearing stories and experiences of others. We will engage in conversations in the classroom and invite students to share and talk more about issues in our world such as racism and disrespect for differences while inspiring change by reading about protests, activists, and success despite the challenges. Sometimes we will read the texts together and other times we may read them independently. My students will not only answer comprehension questions, but also spend quality time answering deep, reflective questions to look at the situations, feelings, and stories that are presented. We are normalizing these types of conversations. I haven't met my students yet, but I know the classroom is a transformative space that I want my students to experience and grow in.
