When you think of a rug in a Kindergarten classroom, you might be imagining an area that gets walked on with muddy shoes, spilled snacks, or a mess of toys. While this is all correct, there is so much more that takes place here. I couldn't have fathomed the importance of a rug before becoming a teacher, but I now know what else takes place here. Students start their day here. They gather in a circle and greet their classmates and teachers, they share ideas, ask questions and discuss things going on in their lives or in the world. They read here, dance here, learn here, share here, grow here, play here, and so much more. It may seem trivial to some, but this area is where so much learning, love and laughter takes place. It is important that a rug is big enough to hold us all together during such important times. Too often, students need to pull up a chair to join the class or squeeze too close for comfort to fit. By donating to this project, you will help give my students all a spot at the rug- a spot they deserve and will be so happy to have.
