Do you remember the first book you really loved? I do. For me, it was Faerie Path, a series that I read when I was 11. This story meant a lot to me not only because the characters and the plot were lovable and enticing, but because it was a book I had chosen for myself, and the pride I had in knowing with every page that I had successfully chosen something that I loved was enchanting. I felt so grown up, so responsible for my own reading, I've never forgotten it. Perhaps you can remember a time when you found a book and fell in love, not only with the book but with the new version of yourself that it revealed to you: The Reader. I believe that all of my students are readers, although some may not know it yet. My goal this year is to provide my students with a diverse library and time in school each day to explore it. I believe that reading improves as students practice reading, and students practice reading when they get to read something that they enjoy. As a first-year teacher, I am in the beginning stages of a classroom library, with aspirations to fill it with books my students will love to read, discuss, inquire about, and respond to. Your contribution to my effort will make all the difference for the students in my class, who will likely learn and feel things through literature that will be remembered long after they've walked out of my classroom doors.
