My students need reading materials that center the stories of BIPOC individuals and social justice issues. Many of my students are below grade-level readers who report that they don't like reading because the books they are assigned are too hard or don't reflect their own experiences and interests. In my reading intervention classes, I want to give my students the opportunity to stay engaged with current events through Scholastic Magazine, see protagonists that they can identify with in novels like Clap When You Land, learn about social justice, and fall in love with reading for fun.
