Recently, a friend confessed to me that her son, who is biracial, was told at school by a classmate that he was "the wrong color." Heart wrenching. Where does this come from? While I'm sure the boy's family was influential in his comment, I began to think about how, as a teacher, I might unknowingly reinforce this lie. I am requesting books that represent the full diversity of America, highlighting the accomplishments, strengths and journeys of people of all colors. Many books that I use for teaching, as well as that fill my classroom library, feature white characters. While that fact has been completely unintentional, recent events in our nation have proven that being intentional about showing the diversity of our country and world with our students is incredibly important. The books that I am requesting for my students will help paint a more accurate picture of the human race, hopefully allowing them to see the absurdity in a thought that there is a "right" skin color. These books will allow students of all skin colors to see themselves and their own fears, insecurities and dreams, reflected in characters of all races.
