Room Transformations All Year Long
Funded Oct 22, 2020I wish words could express the excitement on my students' faces when they opened their envelopes for our virtual classroom transformation days. It was priceless! For our first transformation, we held a "Book Tasting". A week prior, I mailed envelopes filled with materials provided by YOU. These envelopes held placemats, popcorn containers, and "menus" printed for students to record the books that piqued their interest the most. They filled the popcorn containers with a snack to bring to our lesson and then spent the next hour exploring the first 3-4 pages of books from a variety of genres - biography, mystery, fiction, fairy tales, fantasy, and non-fiction - and jotting down notes on their menus to help them remember each book they sampled. Students are still referring to their menus to remind them of books they want to read next!
Our next transformation was a little bit more elaborate. Again, because of YOUR GENEROSITY, students received an envelope in the mail, but this time, they didn't open it right away. Their morning message was written in a code for them to figure out. When they logged into Google Classroom, they saw my chair with crime scene tape on it and were confused until I then joined the lesson incognito. They opened their envelopes and found their detective badges, stick-on mustaches, and "clues" for each of our lessons. Many students went to add different props to their detective costumes for the day. Students worked in small groups to apply reading skills to solve "mysteries" and had to figure out 6 different math problems and earn a "key" from each to "unlock the mystery" during math time. Every single student was so engaged (some even used disguised voices in their small group lessons) throughout the entire day.
Now we are back in school in a hybrid model and I am working on our next transformation, where I will be able to transform our classroom space for students who are in person and share themed materials with students at home. This year it is more important than ever to keep students on their toes and engaged in their learning. I am so incredibly grateful to be able to give my students these experiences because of your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Haley
This classroom project was brought to life by An Anonymous Donor and 6 other donors.Student Choice & Flexible Seating
Funded Jun 2, 2020I am so incredibly thankful for the opportunity to bring flexible seating into my classroom for my students to use when we return to the building. I have set up the different types of desks and seating options you donated for my students so they are ready to go.
While my students have been learning remotely from home, I have seen many of them choose to stand up during lessons or reposition themselves throughout the day. Many parents have shared that their child prefers reading on a bean bag chair or working in different spaces during different lessons. Some students have had fidget tools in their hands to help them concentrate on our lessons. Each experience I've been witnessed has supported the need my students will have for flexible seating in our classroom.
As I was unpacking your generous donations, I was able to wipe them down with disinfectant wipes. Because they are all made of materials that can be easily and thoroughly disinfected, my students will be able to use them as soon as we return to the classroom. Thank you again for choosing to provide my amazing students with flexible seating options.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Haley
